Adelie's Birth Story

On June 22nd 2013 at 7:20pm we welcomed
  Adelie Jo Harper Beck
into this world weighing in at
9lbs 21 1/2 inches long
I've tried writing this a few times, but each time ended up stopping, erasing it and starting over. It's extremely hard to put into words just how amazingly-world stoppingly-breath takingly-surreal it is to bring another human being into this world.  We had 9 months to prepare ourselves for how our lives would be forever changed, and in just a moment all of those thoughts turned into a crazy reality.
saturday morning, the on call Dr. came in my hospital room and checked me, declaring I was 3cm and 100% effaced, giving me the option to have my water broken. I of course said yes. We waited until the next on call Dr. came on at 8am for them to break it. Dr. Hubbard broke my water around 8:15. Both her and my nurse were absolutely amazing, I couldn't have asked for a better team.  Around 11am I was checked for progress and since I was a first time mom, labor was going to take a long time. Since not much progress had been made, along came the dreaded P word. I told them I did not want to start pitocin until I knew that the anesthesiologist was just around the corner ready to give me my epidural. Once I got a time line for him to be there, I gave the go ahead to start it. I was on pitocin for about 30min (long enough) when a cheerful anesthesiologist strolled on into my room and 1...2..3 my epidural was administered before I could bat my eyes. No pain and so incredibly fast.
The rest on the day was pretty uneventful. We watched as my contractions leaped off the monitor, without me feeling a thing! We could not believe how ridiculously easy it all was! Around 3pm we discovered that itty bitty was sunny side up, meaning she was facing my back. With 30min spent laying on each side with one leg in the air followed by sitting straight up Indian style, she was back to her normal position. Naughty girl ;)  Around 5pm the nurse came in and decided to check me just to see where I was (they predicted I wouldn't actually give birth until around 10 at night, so they hadn't been to concerned with checking) Well wouldn't ya know, I was at a 10.  Just a few minutes later I was told to get ready because we were going to start pushing. This would be when I kicked the entire family/friends out of the room and was left with just me, Brandon, my aunt Jolynn and our nursing staff.
The pushing was such a blur. I didn't feel a darn thing. They told me when I was having a contraction, and they told me when to push. Since I couldn't feel anything, I took their word when they said "good good just like that, keep pushing!" I pushed for just under 2 hours.  Halfway through, I heard the door open and looked to my left to the the corner of my dads shirt peeking out from behind the curtain! I yelled "Dad get out, I'm pushing!" his response was "I'm behind the curtain!" I told him to get out regardless, and shut the door. ;) I think he was wondering what was taking so long.
When she started to appear there was a ton of excitement at the foot of my bed. So much, that Brandon ventured his way down and I remember just staring at his face.  He was grinning ear to ear in absolute amazement. That was enough motivation to push with everything I had, when I heard the Dr. say stop pushing. So I did, I laid there for about thirty seconds while she was moving something around. The room was incredibly silent, even my coaches were speechless. And then, completely unexpected she raised Adelie up for me to see. She was incredibly long and shrieking at the top of her lungs! The most beautiful thing I had ever laid eyes on! She got passed to the nurse who immediately plopped her onto my chest. I was sobbing hysterically. By far
the happiest moment of my life.
Jolynn was bawling beside me and Brandon was beaming. He cut the cord, and she was ours. Not just a baby growing in my belly, or a dream that we often talked about. She was perfect. Beautiful and ours.
Our Daughter.
We have a Daughter.

Thank you so much for all the well wishes!
We have been settling into our new parental roles this past week
and could not be happier :)
I will be sticking to my weekly blog updates, documenting milestones and life's little moments
complete with an insane amount of pictures ;)
Love to all!

Week 39

Ready or not! We are about to be parents!! :) After watching three women with due dates very close to my own, deliver their babies over the past few days I was starting to get extremely restless and discouraged thinking... this is NEVER going to happen. Wednesday we had a growth scan to see just how big baby A was....8.3lbs give or take a pound.. and I'm going to say more like give.  Everything else looked good on the scan besides the fact that it took a hot second to get all the measurements because she is soooo squished in here! Friday I met with the Dr. and she said we would talk induction next week if she still hadn't made an appearance.  Ha! The dr. sent me to triage after my apt just to be monitored because I was starting to get painful contractions. Contractions were picking up at the hospital but I had not dilated anymore then 2cm by around 7 so they sent me home. I was in such pain I cried the whole way home, and things were not better once we got home. Brandon started me a bubble bath and made my chicken noodle soup what a great man. Through all this, I was doubled over in pain, bawling my eyes out. Brandon said "We need to go back in". Yes. He was so right! After a car ride straight out of father of the bride part 2 We arrived back at triage and because I was in so much pain and not dilating at all the resident dr. gave us the option of staying over night and giving me a shot of morphine and phenergan to ease my pain and hopefully get things rolling. So Brandon and I have been camped out here in my room since last night. This am the on call dr. assessed me at 3cm and 100% and gave me the option of braking my water. Um. Why of course. And so here we are. Water broke and pitocin started! Wish us luck! Can't wait to hold this sweet baby girl!! :)

Adelieeeee come out come out wherever you are!!!
On Wednesday, Girl got a Popsicle razor back dress, I got a nursing bra

Jolynn brought Adelie these ceramic shoes that my mom had made for her

I keep posting both weeks so I can either feel ahead of the game or completely overdue, depending on how big a pity party I'm throwing myself on any given day.... I'm going on day 4 of at home misery. I'm still getting random spurts of contractions, ridiculous waves of exhaustion and constant back pain/cramping.  Perfect pregnancy right up until it's time to give birth, and then she doesn't want to come out. Son of a.  Jolynn has retreated home for the time being and Jamison Aunt Jam is now up here waiting, rubbing my feet, fetching me snacks and keeping me from pulling my hair out. Come on Adelie, we are all w a i t i n g on

Laborish

That's right. I am officially in labor. Early labor, not active quite yet....but labor non the less. And yes it hurts. On Wednesday I started getting contractions that were about 6 minutes apart all day long. I didn't go to work, but made it to my drs apt at 4:30 where she checked me (still at a 1 80% effaced) she decided to send me to the nurses triage where they hooked me up to monitors for baby A's heart rate and my contraction levels. It wasn't 5 minutes after the nurse left the room, that she came back in and said, " you're contracting every minute..Do you feel those?!?" ha. Well yes, yes I did. She checked me I was still at a 1 80% effaced, so she sent me on an hour walk to try and jumpstart some dilation. Luckily my inlaws showed up and Margaret had her walking shoes on ready to go! We came back and got hooked up again, I was still contracting up a storm but was still only 1 cm yet slightly more effaced. More monitoring occurred, and then the shuffled me into the "whirlpool" aka room with a bathtub for me to soak and help dilate me while Brandon sat in a chair next to me playing jimmy buffet of his laptop and updating the Facebook world all about my labor process. He claimed he was blogging for me since I couldn't. How nice of him, bloody show and all. Ha. After the whirlpool I had progressed to a 2! Whoohoo! Unfortunately I stopped dilating and so the on call dr sent me home to labor and expected to see me back later that night. They also sent me home with an ambien, even though I hate taking any form of drug, my dad and Brandon talked me into it, saying I need my rest. Knocked me out cold. Woke up the next morning at 6 and forced my aunt jolynn (who had come up that night) to go walk with me. And then Brandon at 8. Since contractions were about 3minutes apart all day, we decided I better go in again to be checked around 5pm also known as rush hour. Greaaattt idea....after being monitored and seeing my crazy contractions on the chart, I was checked again. No progress but baby was not happy, so I had to turn on my side to improve her heart rate before I could be discharged.  The nurse said that this early labor could last for a few days with a first time mom. Not that I'm counting...but today was day 2....
Wednesday before being sent for monitoring.
Top is baby's heart rate, bottom are my contractions.
Suffering through back labor
Don't let my smile deceive you, I actually wanted to punch someone.

So as of now, I'm continuing to labor at home, in pain, waiting for either my water to break or severe contractions to start. Let's hope things get going soon, because this is no fun.

Pitocen drip?

Does anyone have an extra Pitocen Drip? Because this little girl is getting way too comfortable in my belly and she has a whole lot of people waiting to meet her! I know she will come when she's good and ready. But seriously, doesn't she realize we need her now we would like her now? :) Since I'm an impatient person (as previously noted) and I really don't like to sit still for long...I have been actively walking, cleaning, mowing, camerasnapping, bouncing, spicyfoodtasting, stairclimbing, squating, pedicuring and grocery shopping for the past two weeks. I have my weekly apt tomorrow, hopefully there has been some lots of progress! If not, at least I have gotten plently of exercise, most of my chores done and have pretty purple toes!  I'm also going to chalk one up for the record books and say that I think she get's this stubborness from her dad ;)
